- On average, each day in Australia, one child will die, 170 will be admitted to hospital and 5,000 children will require medical attention as a result of unintentional injury
- Traffic related injuries are the greatest cause of child deaths in Australia. The pattern of traffic related injury changes as the child grows and develops, children 5-9 years are cognitively undeveloped in terms of deciding the degree of safety when crossing the road with subsequent risk as a pedestrian. Children become increasingly independent on our roads from 10 years of age introducing potential injury caused by bicycle, scooter, roller-blading and skateboard riding.
